Vultee XP-68

Last revised September 18, 1999

The Vultee XP-68 Tornado was a proposed version of the XP-54 experimental pusher fighter. The XP-68 was to be powered by the 42-cylinder Wright R-2160 Tornado radial engine driving a set of contrarotating propellers. In July of 1941, the USAAF assigned the designation XP-68 to the project. In the event, the Wright Tornado engine project was abandoned before anything could be built, and the XP-68 project never got off the drawing board. The XP-68 was officially cancelled on November 22, 1941.
